Connecting a ChatGPT subscription
# Connecting a ChatGPT subscription Warp lets you connect your **ChatGPT plan** to use eligible OpenAI models in Warp Agent conversations in the Warp app. Requests that use the connected plan count against its OpenAI usage limits instead of using Warp [credits](/support-and-community/plans-and-billing/credits/) for inference. Connecting a plan works like [Bring Your Own API Key (BYOK)](/agents/inference/bring-your-own-api-key/), except you sign in to your OpenAI account instead of pasting an API key. The connection covers eligible OpenAI models only. Warp does not support connecting a Claude subscription, and Anthropic, Google, and xAI models are unaffected. :::note Like BYOK, connecting a ChatGPT plan is available on Free and all eligible paid plans for individual users and organizations with 10 or fewer employees, subject to Warp's [Terms of Service](https://www.warp.dev/legal/terms-of-service). Larger organizations need a Business or Enterprise plan. See [Warp pricing](https://www.warp.dev/pricing) for current availability. ::: ## How it works When you connect your plan, Warp opens your browser to OpenAI's Sign in with ChatGPT consent screen. Approving the connection links your ChatGPT account to your Warp account and authorizes OpenAI to share a delegated credential with Warp. Unlike a BYOK API key or a [SuperGrok subscription](/agents/inference/grok-subscription/), Warp stores that credential for your Warp account rather than in your device's keychain. With a plan connected, eligible OpenAI requests from the Warp Agent count against your ChatGPT plan. A pasted OpenAI API key takes precedence if you have both. Connecting makes any additional OpenAI models supported by your ChatGPT plan selectable in the model picker. OpenAI determines which plan tiers, models, and capabilities are eligible. ### What OpenAI sees Warp sends OpenAI fixed activity and purpose labels with each request that uses your connected plan. The labels describe the request type, are not derived from your prompt, and may appear in your [ChatGPT usage settings](https://chatgpt.com/settings/usage). Supporting requests in the same conversation, such as generating a title or compacting conversation history, can also count against your plan. :::caution Data retention on OpenAI's side is governed by your own OpenAI account and its terms. Warp's Zero Data Retention agreements cover Warp-managed inference, so they do not apply to requests billed to your plan. See [Zero Data Retention and BYOK](/agents/inference/bring-your-own-api-key/#zero-data-retention-zdr-and-byok). ::: ## Connecting your ChatGPT plan 1. In the Warp app, go to **Settings** > **Agents** > **Warp Agent** and find the "Use your OpenAI ChatGPT plan" row under "Custom Inference." 2. Click **Continue with ChatGPT**. Warp opens the OpenAI consent screen in your browser. Click **Cancel** in Warp to abandon the attempt. 3. Approve the connection in your browser. Back in Warp, the row shows "Connected as YOUR_EMAIL on DATE," where YOUR_EMAIL is the address on your ChatGPT account. 4. Choose an OpenAI model from the model picker in your prompt input. Connecting a plan doesn't change your selected model. After you connect your plan, Warp shows a one-time notice that the connection is active. Click **Manage usage** to open your [ChatGPT usage settings](https://chatgpt.com/settings/usage). If the row shows "Reconnect to use your plan for requests" next to the connected timestamp, the link still exists but OpenAI is no longer sharing a credential. Disconnect and connect again. ## Usage and billing behavior When an OpenAI model runs on your connected plan: * The request counts against your ChatGPT plan, within OpenAI's usage limits for that plan. * Review and manage that usage in your [ChatGPT usage settings](https://chatgpt.com/settings/usage), not in Warp. The **Billing and usage** settings page links out to the same place. See [platform credits](/support-and-community/plans-and-billing/platform-credits/) for how Warp's platform layer is billed when a local run uses your ChatGPT plan. ### When OpenAI refuses a request OpenAI can reject a subscription-billed request, for example when your plan reaches its usage limit. Depending on the error, Warp may offer **Try again**, **Manage ChatGPT usage**, or **Continue with Warp credits**. Choosing **Continue with Warp credits** switches the rest of that conversation to Warp-funded inference. New conversations return to using your plan. ### Auto models Warp's **Auto** models always use Warp's own inference and consume Warp credits, even with a ChatGPT plan connected. To use your plan, select a specific OpenAI model from the model picker. ## Disconnecting In the Warp app, go to **Settings** > **Agents** > **Warp Agent**, find the "Use your OpenAI ChatGPT plan" row, and click **Disconnect**. Warp unlinks the account on its servers. Eligible OpenAI requests then use your pasted OpenAI API key if one is configured, or Warp credits otherwise. ## Troubleshooting ### "That ChatGPT account is already connected to a different Warp account" This error can also mean this Warp account already has a different ChatGPT account connected. Each ChatGPT account links to one Warp account, and each Warp account links to one ChatGPT account. Disconnect the existing link first, then connect again. ### "Verify the email on your ChatGPT account with OpenAI, then try again" Verify the email with OpenAI, then click **Continue with ChatGPT** again. ### "Your browser is signed in to a different Warp account than this one" The Warp account signed in to your browser does not match the Warp account that started the connection. Sign in to the same Warp account in your browser, then click **Continue with ChatGPT** again. ### "Warp needs your permission in the browser" The consent screen was dismissed or denied. Click **Continue with ChatGPT** and approve it. ## Related pages * [Bring Your Own API Key](/agents/inference/bring-your-own-api-key/) — Use your own Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google API keys. * [SuperGrok subscription](/agents/inference/grok-subscription/) — Use Grok models through your xAI account. * [Model choice](/agents/inference/model-choice/) — Full list of supported models and `model_id` values. * [Credits](/support-and-community/plans-and-billing/credits/) — How Warp credits work and when they're consumed.Tell me about this feature: https://docs.warp.dev/agents/inference/chatgpt-subscription/Connect a ChatGPT plan to use eligible OpenAI models in Warp Agent conversations in the Warp app without using Warp credits for inference.
